CULTURAL HERITAGE

Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains. The city has a Kurdish majority with a significant Arab and Assyrian population.

Dara or Daras (Greek: Δάρας) was an important East Roman fortress city in northern Mesopotamia on the border with the Sassanid Empire. Because of its great strategic importance, it featured prominently in the Roman-Persian conflicts of the 6th century, with the famous Battle of Dara taking place before its walls in 530.

Kaunos was a city of ancient Caria and in Anatolia, a few km west of the modern town of Dalyan, Muğla Province, Turkey. Six rock tombs on the Dalyan river (4th - 2nd century BC), which are Dalyan’s prime sight The façades of the rock tombs resemble the fronts of Hellenistic temples with two Ionian pillars, a triangular pediment, an architrave with toothed friezes, and acroterions shaped like palm leaves.

The Prinkipo Greek Orphanage (also known as Prinkipo Palace or Büyükada Greek Orphanage) is a historic 20,000-square-meter wooden building on Büyükada, one of the nine Princes’ Islands off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, in the Sea of Marmara. It is considered the largest wooden building in Europe and second largest in the world.

Kırık Aqueduct (Kovuk Kemer) was built by Mimar Sinan atop an old Roman aqueduct. It is 35m high and 408m long. Kovuk means hollow, Kirik means broken; it changes course (90 degrees) at the entrance.

The Belevi Mausoleum, also known as the Mausoleum at Belevi is a Hellenistic monument tomb located in Turkey. The monument was the burial place of the Seleucid Greek King Antiochus II Theos who reigned 261–246 BC.

Lübbey Village is an abandoned mountain village located 113 km east of Izmir in Ödemiş. There were 100 households living in village in 1950s, only 10 people still remain in Lübbey.
