Inventory: Kadıköy

Inventory is an art project where we dig the ephemeral characteristics of the public space and street furniture. Public space collects culture constantly as the surfaces are painted with tags, graffiti and covered with stickers. Conditions change with weather, impacts and maintenance. Interference create uniqueness, but unlike cultural objects under protection in museums or galleries, street furniture is in constant danger of renovation or replacement. We document and preserve objects in digital 3D format to create an inventory and reveal it in the shape of virtual installations reflecting the vibes of cities.

We started Inventory series in Kadıköy district in Istanbul which is our own neighborhood, practicing on methodology & process of capturing a selection of objects in wide range, complexity, size and number. Including; bollards, dilapidated cars, benches, concrete pots, mail boxes etc. with paint, stickers and graffiti on them. While composing Kadıköy inventory we let the coincidences lead the way — a random arrangement was applied referencing the chaotic soul of the city.

Our Kadikoy/Istanbul street furniture inventory (approx. 350 units) is installed on a push cart which is widely used by refuse collectors in Istanbul.

We have 3D scanned nearly 400 unique street furnitures of Kadikoy, Istanbul with almost 20K photographs. These are bunch of them rotating in a perfect loop. Our new series "Inventory" will continue with New York, Venice and Berlin in the next months. We highly recommend to experience this with a VR headset.
